LinkedIn Banner Size: Preview, Safe Areas & Dimensions
LinkedIn banner size is 1584 x 396 pixels (a 4:1 aspect ratio), up to 8 MB, as JPG, PNG or static GIF. The same image is called the LinkedIn cover photo, background image or profile banner depending on who you ask — it is one spec. Knowing the number is the easy part: your profile photo covers the lower left and the mobile app shows a narrower slice, so upload your banner below to see the crops and overlaps before you publish.

Why the right size is not enough
A banner exported at exactly 1584 x 396 can still look wrong on a live profile. LinkedIn places your profile photo over the lower left of the image, trims the edges as the profile card rounds off, and shows a narrower horizontal slice inside the mobile app. A headline centred in your design tool can end up half-hidden behind an avatar.
That is why this page leads with a preview rather than a table. Load your banner, switch the overlays on, and you can see which parts of your artwork survive on every layout.
- Keep headlines and logos inside the green safe text area.
- Leave the lower-left corner clear for your profile photo.
- Avoid critical detail in the outer bands, which mobile can crop.
- Export at 1584 x 396 rather than scaling a smaller image up.
Banner size vs cover photo size
LinkedIn has used several names for the same image: background image, cover photo, header image and banner all refer to the wide picture behind the top of your profile. Whichever term you searched for, 1584 x 396 pixels is the size you want for a personal profile.
Company pages are different. Their banner is wider and shorter in practice, so use the company banner page for those dimensions rather than reusing a profile banner.

- LinkedIn crops the banner differently by device. The app shows a narrower horizontal slice than desktop, so content near the left and right edges disappears on phones. Move important content toward the centre.
- Where does the profile photo cover the banner?
- In the lower left, roughly from 3% to 18% of the width and the bottom half of the height. Keep logos and text out of that corner.
- Is my image uploaded anywhere?
- No. Your banner is read and analysed entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored.
- Can I use a JPG instead of a PNG?
- Yes. PNG keeps text and flat colour crisp, JPG produces smaller files for photographic banners. Both are accepted, along with static GIFs.
