A LinkedIn banner template saves you from guessing. Each of these is built at 1584 x 396 with the safe text area, profile photo overlap, mobile crop, desktop crop and centre alignment guides marked, so you can design on top of the guides and delete the layer before exporting.

How to use the template
Open the template, add your artwork on a layer beneath the guides, and position your headline inside the green area. Once you are happy, hide the guide layer and export at 1584 x 396. The PNG guide can also be dropped into the banner preview on this site as a sanity check.
If you are working in a tool that has no layers, keep the guide open in a second window and match your positions to it.
